CIGRE Ireland was delighted to organise the inaugural SC B3 Substation Training Course in Dublin this week.

The response from industry was exceptional, with more than 110 attendees joining from across the island of Ireland, representing transmission, distribution, consulting engineering and industry partners. The level of engagement throughout the two days demonstrated the strong appetite for technical knowledge sharing and professional development within our sector.
Developed by CIGRE Study Committee B3 – Substations and Electrical Installations, the course focused on Substation Planning and GIS Substation Design, and was delivered by an excellent team including Hugh Cunningham, John Finn, Jan Bednarik and Colm Twomey.
A particular highlight was the presentation of a CIGRE Distinguished Member Award to Colm Twomey, recognising his outstanding contribution to CIGRE and the power industry over many years. The award was presented by Ken Atkinson, Secretary of the CIGRE Irish National Committee.
Many thanks to everyone who helped make the event a success, including Dan Catanase, Ken Atkinson, Niamh Talbot, Rachel Whelan McElroy, the teams at Engineers Ireland and Abbey Conferencing, and the members of the Irish CIGRE NGN, particularly Nima Sal Sudhan, Hamid Reza Shokrani and Chandira Jinachandran.
Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended, contributed to the discussions, and helped create such a positive learning environment.
Following the enthusiastic feedback received, we hope to continue developing and delivering additional technical training modules in Ireland and beyond.
The success of this event demonstrates the value of bringing engineers together to share experience, build capability and support the delivery of Ireland’s energy transition.
