History & Legacy

CIGRE was founded in 1921 as an international non-governmental organization with the goal of advancing electrical power systems. Over the decades, CIGRE has grown into a global authority, uniting experts from utilities, manufacturers, consultants, research institutes, and academia to collaborate on complex energy challenges.

Since its inception in 1955, the CIGRE Irish National Committee has been instrumental in bridging Ireland’s electrical power sector with global advancements. The committee organizes national events, facilitates member participation in international sessions, and fosters collaboration among Ireland’s top professionals and organizations in the energy industry.

Key Milestones

  • 1948: Dr. Robert C. Cuffe becomes the first individual CIGRE member from Ireland.
  • 1955: Establishment of the CIGRE Irish National Committee (INC), marking Ireland’s active participation in the global CIGRE network.
  • 1986: Introduction of an “unwritten rule” ensuring one or two papers from Ireland at each CIGRE session.
  • 1998: Formal allocation of three papers for Ireland at CIGRE sessions.

International Collaboration

CIGRE operates as a global network, uniting experts from around the world to collaborate on enhancing electrical power systems. This international collaboration includes partnerships with utilities, manufacturers, consultants, research institutes, and academic institutions, fostering a rich environment for knowledge exchange and innovation.

Core Activities
& Focus Areas

CIGRE is supported by regional and national committees, including CIGRE Ireland. These committees represent their respective regions within the global framework, ensuring that local expertise and insights contribute to international advancements. CIGRE Ireland plays a pivotal role in advocating for Ireland’s interests and facilitating the participation of Irish professionals in CIGRE’s global activities.

Technical Committees and Study Groups

CIGRE’s Technical Committee (TC) oversees various Study Committees (SCs) that focus on specific areas within the electrical power sector. These committees select study topics, define their scope, monitor progress, and approve publications, driving technical research and knowledge dissemination.

Working Groups (WGs)

Working Groups (WGs) conduct specialized studies and projects within predefined scopes and timelines. Nominated by National Committees like CIGRE Ireland, WGs address areas such as power generation, transformers, overhead lines, substations, DC systems, protection and automation, among others. These groups play a crucial role in developing technical solutions and best practices.

Publications and e-Library

CIGRE publishes the ELECTRA journal, a bilingual magazine issued every two months that shares the results of CIGRE Study Committees’ work and provides insights into the association’s activities. Additionally, the CIGRE e-Library offers members free online access to a comprehensive collection of CIGRE publications, including session papers, technical brochures, and reports, supporting continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

Events and Colloquiums

CIGRE organizes key events such as the biennial Paris Sessions and national symposiums, providing platforms for members to present research, discuss industry trends, and network with peers. CIGRE Ireland hosts events like colloquiums and competitions, enhancing professional engagement and collaboration within the local energy sector.
